Lift Truck Battery Safety
The power to run electric lift trucks is supplied by large industrial batteries which have to be charged regularly and maintained properly. Safety measures should always be followed while connecting the battery to the charger. It is vital to check battery fluid levels.
PPE - Personal Protective Equipment
It is vital for employees working with a lift truck battery to wear eye protection. Other PPG include safety glasses, goggles, or a full face shield. The best way to protect both clothing and skin from other residue or leaked acid is to wear thick rubber gloves on the hands and an approved apron on the body.
Emergency Eyewash Station
An emergency eyewash station should be situated close to the charging place. The path to the station must not be blocked and an injured worker should be able to go to the eyewash post from the charging place within 10 seconds while walking.
Charger Safety
The charger and battery must be at the same amperage. It should be turned off while the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
While near a battery and charging area, open fire are prohibited. Never permit items like lighters or matches to be used while somebody is inspecting the fluid levels in the battery.
Ventilation
It is vital to keep the battery charging place well ventilated. The recharging method can release fumes. These fumes are both toxic and explosive.
