The company Potain was established within La Clayette, France during 1928. Since that time, the company has grown into a leading manufacturer of cranes. The company is responsible for over 100,000 cranes in operation around the world. At present, the company makes over 60 models from different production plants in France, China, Portugal, Germany and Italy. The company represents many different product ranges utilized for various applications. These machinery are sold through a global Manitowoc dealer network.

The Potain family makes 3 different tower crane families. The self-erecting cranes are the smallest kinds in the Potain range. These cranes vary from 1 ton to 7.98 ton capacity. The next size up is the top-slewing cranes that are higher and bigger. These cranes range from 7.98 to 64 tons. In addition, these are the largest special application cranes that are custom-designed. These models provide a reach capacity of 160 tons.

Several of the main innovations with the company include the LLC range of hoists, the Vision Cab and the Dialog control system. The growing reputation of the company has expanded their appeal with different models. Potain cranes are often found on conventional construction sites, bridge building projects, power stations, shipbuilding yards and ship-building projects.

Manitowoc has 2 of their largest manufacturing facilities within the United States. The Manitowoc manufacturing facility is situated within the state of Wisconsin. In this state, both crawler cranes and the tower crane parts are made in Pennsylvania inside the Shady Grove facility. Here boom trucks and mobile cranes are manufactured. Regional offices are located within Mexico and within Brazil. In addition, the extensive dealer network found throughout the United States and United States offers support and coverage unrivalled by any other crane producer.
