Driving a lift truck is much more complicated compared to driving a car. A lift truck driver must be highly skilled and trained in the operation of a forklift. Operating a lift truck needs a high level of attentiveness. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration or also known as OSHA reports that 85 people die in forklift-related mishaps per year. Approximately 35,000 people are hurt each and every year in lift truck mishaps. Nearly 50 percent of operator deaths are caused by a forklift tip over.

In order to prevent tip overs, it is essential that drivers know how to correctly estimate load weight. In the construction business, the load weight is usually posted right on the load. If the load consists of cubes containing 90 concrete blocks and a concrete block weighs 16 kilograms, the whole load weight would be about 1,360 kilograms. If a load is wet, the driver must take more weight into account.

It can be unsafe if the driver makes poorly informed estimates as the loads actual weight and whether the machinery could handle the load. If a driver cannot be sure about the load weight, he should ask for help from the supervisor.

Failure to pull up near enough to a building or lift a load utilizing an extended boom could be another cause of tip overs. To prevent tipping forklift, it is important to utilize the load chart. Even if a forklift does not actually tip over, an accident has happened whenever the rear wheels come off the ground. This means the limitations of the forklift have been exceeded. Though damage may not be obvious, the back axle can have been damaged upon hitting the ground.

It is even possible for lift trucks to tip even when not carrying a load. Unloaded lift trucks can tip just after a driver has placed a load on scaffolding utilizing an extended boom. If the driver reverses the lift truck and turns suddenly while bringing the boom down, the forklift's center of gravity will be pushed to the edges and can lead to a tip over. An operator must always use the joysticks to retract and lower the fork.
